What are Essential Oils?

All essential oils are naturally occurring organic compounds. They are extracted from herbs, spices, flowers and trees. Rosemary, for instance, comes from leaves, Neroli from blossom, Orange from fruit and Cedar from wood

They are called 'essential oils' because they do not simply capture the plant's fragrance, but also concentrate its beneficial properties.

Although the term 'aromatherapy' was not used until the 1920's, the art of aromatherapy was practiced many hundreds of years ago. Many ancient cultures, such as the Chinese, Egyptians, Persian and Indian have made use of essential oils.

Current research has shown the value of many traditional remedies and today essential oils are used for a wide variety of ailments as well as for relaxing.

The oils have many uses, including relieving headaches and other stress related ailments, to minor first aid for cuts, burns and insect bites, relief for coughs and colds, muscular aches and pains, room fragrance and perfumes.

The general rule is that oils are safe, but some should not be used on children, mums to be, epileptics and people suffering from high blood pressure, so it is wise to check before you buy.
